Linkreferral makes the world go round.
|
Having had this website for a few years I get all sorts of junk email. For instance :
From : notice@linkreferral.com
Subject : member ID #104912 - Linkreferral.com monthly traffic update
So far, we could reason that there exists this thing called linkreferral.com, which has members, over 100,000 of them at that, of which I am one. Nice and grand, and all news to me. We proceed :
How much free traffic are you receiving from us since you joined? Login and find out, starting at http://www.linkreferral.com
$logininfo
once your login, be sure to visit and review at least few sites to get your webpage back up in the rankings for more free traffic and input from your fellow members - the quality of traffic is now better than ever within more quality control on visits and reviews...
-----------------------
2005-12-04 - updated! ranking criteria within the members directory... (more emphasis on review quality)
your review quality is now a more important factor in overall rankings of the members directory and poor quality reviews will not be counted at all. by doing this we want to insure the quality of each review and discourage inaccurate/poor reviews, cut and paste reviews, etc...
login for more details.....
I'm very glad to hear about my $logininfo. I'm further very glad to hear the nice people running this wonderful service know full well the difference between ensuring and insuring, and they quite mean they're insuring the quality. All that's missing is a $insuringbank somewhere in there, but I'm certain it was an iarnest mistake. Or somesuch.
Since I got nothing better to do, apparently, I grep't my logs, and lo and behold. There are, in fact, no less than 5 hits from linkreferral.com, starting sometime in June, and scripted the lot of them.
Such traffic deluge certainly obliges me to do more than just shrug. I'd like to give something back. Something nice. Something everybody wants. Maybe a heartfelt email.
I stare at the empty form and I don't know what to write, how to best express my deepest feelings on the matter. So I grep my inbox, on the theory that other people before me must have had the same problem, and might have produced something I could stand behind. Incidentally, what do you think I find in there ? Well. 5 emails from our linkreferral friends to go with each scripted hit.
How very kind of them. So then, I write :
I gratefully received your most recent email. It is a pleasure to be informed about the comings and goings of the most obscure corners of the internet, right in the convenience of my own livingroom.
To properly show my appreciation, I have enclosed a little gift of my own.
Further emails will give you a chance to be entered into a draw for a ticket that gives you the opportunity to participate in the delivery of randomly generated files up to 1 Petabyte !!
That's 1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes !
Act now !!! Free lube !
The little gift of my own was a gimp tarball, sized about 9888 Kbytes. Sure, it's not a very original gift, but it's what I had handy.
And now I'll have to excuse myself, I'm going to go write a random file generator. Back presently.
15
tickets already sold.
